How to Obtain a REAL ID Driver’s License or ID in Illinois

I recently obtained my State of Illinois REAL ID. The federal government has mandated that by October 1st, 2020, all domestic travelers must have a valid passport or REAL ID to pass through TSA checkpoints.

Here is What you Need to Obtain a REAL ID in Illinois

(You can also view the checklist at realid.ilsos.gov/checklist.html)

Your social security card makes the entire process much simpler.

I could not locate my social security card, complicating the process for me. You can go online at https://www.ssa.gov and request a replacement card to be sent via mail. I was, of course, locked out of my social security online account, so I drove to a local social security office and applied in person. There, the representative was able to unlock my account and I received my replacement card in 2 weeks.

A recent (90 day) pay stub or W2 form is acceptable in place of a social security card but your full social security number must be included on the pay stub or W2 form.

A valid passport or a birth certificate.

Use a passport if you have one. A birth certificate will require documentation of a name change if you have ever changed your name.

Two documents that prove your current address.

These documents or statements will be scanned, so all of your personal account info will be included in the scan. Any of the following will work:

a) Utility bill in your name
b) Bank statement with you name
c) Rental agreement
d) Explanation of benefits on an insurance claim

Proof of signature.

A current driver’s license or state ID work best.

Once you are at the DMV facility, there are several steps to complete, including a new photo and a short face-to-face interview. Some people have reported wait times of several hours. Here is another tip… GO ON A MONDAY! The DMV facility at 837 S. Westmore, in Lombard, is open on Mondays for REAL ID only. If you are 65 and over, are disabled, or are a veteran there is a special line, with a much shorter wait time. This special line is not well marked…so make sure to ask where it is. The entire process at the DMV took me less than 30 minutes.

I hope this is helpful. You can always call or text me at 630-452-6210 with questions!
